Tanzwerk
Task
The theater Braunschweig is planning to expand its dance department on the area between the Theaterwall and Umflutgraben in the immediate vicinity of the theater's main auditorium. Adjacent land will be acquired by the city of Braunschweig and made available for the expansion. Until now, the ballet has lacked a versatile experimental space in which small pieces can be developed with a small number of actors without elaborate sets and in direct contact with the audience.
Description
We have chosen to push the physical limits of a body in dance as the concept for our design. We bring the architecture to the seemingly impossible and convey a form of illusion and floating with the design. Two cores span a space on the first floor that contains the ballet hall. Along this space, two staircases lead to the upper floor, which contains the workshop stage as a closed box. Spectators and dancers are guided into the space in a circular movement, where they meet and stage pieces in an experimental, diverse way. Only a limited view to the outside is permitted on the upper floor, while the first floor is designed to be open in order to incorporate the surrounding park. The project was created in collaboration with Fynn Kleen.
